OHCHR for slight cut in mandate
KATHMANDU, APR 10 -
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nepal (OHCHR-Nepal) has advised the government not to scale down the UN body’s mandate drastically during its stay in Nepal.
The Prime Minister’s Office had forwarded the draft proposal of new agreement to OHCHR-Nepal, whose current term and mandate expires on June 9.
“The UN body is not happy with our proposal to considerably cut its current mandate for its next stay here,” a senior government official, who is engaged in the negotiations, told the Post.
After receiving feedback from Nepal’s Geneva-based mission and other stakeholders, the government had proposed a drastic revision of the mandate of the UN body.
“The scope of the mandate is under discussion and OHCHR expects the government to agree on the general mandate that its country office enjoys,” said OHCHR National Public Information Officer Chun Gurung.
The mandate of the UN body includes monitoring human rights and international law by carrying out investigations, advising authorities of Nepal on the formation and implementation of policies, among others.
OHCHR-Nepal Chief Richard Bennett favoured little reduction of the mandate and was mum about the exit policy, the official said.
