Shut Tarai in grip of riots
KATHMANDU, APR 09 -
Violence and vandalism marked the second day of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF)-imposed Madhes banda.
The general strike enforced to press for the implementation of agreements reached with Madhesi parties and timely promulgation of the constitution saw roads, marketplaces and educational institutions shut in Dhanusha, Siraha, Saptari, Bara and Sunsari districts.
MJF supporters vandalised dozens of vehicles in these districts. They vandalised a Chinese Embassy vehicle at Sunsari’s Inaruwa, where five people were injured in a clash with security personnel.
The strike enforcers vandalised 42 tankers along the Birgunj-Pathlaiya road in Bara. In Dhanusha, police rounded up around 100 MJF supporters for disorderly conduct and vandalism. In Sarlahi, police detained at least 40 MJF activists, including a party lawmaker, in course of clearing obstructions on the East-West Highway. An inspector was injured when MJF supporters hurled stones in a clash with police.
Yadav demands PM step down
KATHMANDU: Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) Chairman Upendra Yadav on Friday demanded that Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal resign from the post and pave the way for a national unity government.
He claimed the incumbent government was a failure. “This government can neither draft the constitution on time nor complete the peace process,” Yadav said at a press meet in the Capital.
Yadav stressed the need of consensus among the political forces to promulgate the constitution as scheduled.
“The deadline for constitution-writing should not be extended at any means,” he said, adding that his party would continue to press the government and parties to deliver the statute within the May 28 deadline.
Yadav also accused that the government used excessive force to suppress the party’s peaceful strike in the Tarai. (PR)
