VIP escorting takes bulk of fuel budget in Banke
NEPALGUNJ, APR 07 -
Escorting VIPs takes a bulk of the budget allocated for fuel purchase, leaving the District Police Office (DPO) Banke in hardship. DPO now runs up a bill of Rs. 700,000, which the government does not foot.
Moreover, police fail to adopt relevant measures to strengthen security in the district thanks to fuel crunch.
“We are compelled to spend half the allocated budget on fuel for the security of visiting VIPs in the district,” said Superintendent of Police Mahesh Bikram Shah.
Home Ministry provides Rs. 50,000 to the DPO for fuel on a monthly basis.
Sources claimed that DPO could not patrol some highly sensitive areas due to dearth of fuel.
Area police posts, city police and district traffic police office manage fuel expenses with the help of municipality and business houses.
DPO gets necessary help from zonal police office and riot police for some programmes and riots in the district. In return, DPO has to provide them fuel.
DPO heavily depends on local petrol pumps to fill fuel on credit. They sometimes stop providing fuel when police fail to clear the dues.
According to Shah, DPO has been facing challenges in maintaining peace and security due to lack of vehicles as well as required fuel.
