Witch-hunt in CPN-UML
- Signature campaigners to face action
KATHMANDU, APR 05 -
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Monday directed the CPN-UML leadership to take strong action against Constituent Assembly (CA) members and leaders, who initiated a signature campaign against the party-led government.
Prime Minister Nepal went on the offensive after concluding that the campaigners were “conspiring” to topple his government in collusion with the main opposition, UCPN (Maoist).
“Punishing those who conspired against the party and the party-led government is very much in line with our party policy and the prime minister has already taken a step towards this end,” said Krishna Gopal Shreshta, a UML Central Committee member.
Shrestha said party Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam, Yam Lal Kandel, D.B. Karki and Kiran Gurung, among others, will face action.
Notably, party Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal and General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel, who “provoked” the CA members to launch the campaign, are not on the list because they helped cancel the UML Parliamentary Party meeting. Scheduled for Sunday, the meeting was supposed to discuss the campaign against Nepal and take a decision on the issue.
Nepal forwarded the name list to the central Disciplinary Commission (DC) for action after consulting Central Committee members K.P Sharma Oli, Bishnu Paudel and Bhim Rawal.
“The party should investigate what is wrong and right before taking action,” said Chief of the DC Amrit Kumar Bohara.
UML Vice Chairman Gautam said, “The decision to take action against me is completely wrong. Nonetheless, I am desperately waiting for action.” The UML leader said he joined the signature campaign for the sake of Nepal and Nepalis.
Over 70 CA members have signed on a proposal demanding that Nepal “pave the way” for the formation of a national consensus government.
