Garbage row ends for now
KATHMANDU, APR 03 -
Kathmanduites will heave a sigh of relief from Sunday with the resumption of garbage collection for disposal.
Garbage collection in the Kathmandu Valley had halted since Monday after the people in the vicinity of Aletar landfill site in Nuwakot obstructed the disposal putting forth a 22-point demand.
The Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre (SWMRMC) on Saturday reached a nine-point agreement with the agitating locals to resume waste disposal.
“The garbage will be collected from Sunday,” said Rabinman Shrestha, senior official at the Environment Management Department of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). “It will take at least four days to collect all the garbage– which is around 2,500 tonnes– from the Valley.”
The agitating locals have, however, warned of stringent protests if the government fails to implement the agreements.
“The government is responsible for the current mess, as it never translates its pledges into practices,” said Dhan Bahadur Tamang, chairman of A Class Garbage Struggle Committee. “The government always tries to deceive us.”
Although the government has reached more than forty agreements with agitating groups, only a few of them have been implemented effectively, say locals. SWMRMC, on the other hand, claims to have addressed most of the locals’ demands.
The blame-game between the locals and the government has become a seemingly unending phenomenon so far as garbage disposal of the Valley is concerned.
