Raw deal on cards for obese police officers
KATHMANDU, APR 02 -
If things were not bad for fat cops, they are going to be, and pretty soon…
In its bid to cut the fat in the organisation, Nepal Police (NP) Headquarters is all set to introduce a new regulation. The new rule will make sure that only fit bodies with good credentials will count when it comes to promotion and postings in sensitive areas.
NP Spokesperson Bigyan Raj Sharma made an announcement to this effect on Friday. “Preparations are underway to enforce the regulation,” Sharma went on, pointing that obese officers cannot run fast enough to catch active and slim criminals.
Unlike in the glamour world, where zero size is a must, the police organisation said it was not after zero size. Fit bodies are all it wants and the idea is to make police personnel more active and fit to fight crime. “Quick response is what police officers need to demonstrate every time,” said Sharma.
It all started when Secretariat of the Inspector General received complaints that most fat security officers choose to stay in offices and rarely venture out to take stock of the security situation, leading to low police performance.
For those willing to shed weight, the headquarters has prescribed regular exercise or yoga.
Only on Thursday, the headquarters organised a yoga camp under the instruction of yoga guru Ramdev.
And what about those, who fail to trim their waistlines? The headquarters plans to transfer them to low-priority areas.
Victim-friendly programme
The police headquarters has come up with a programme aimed at making officers more professional and responsive to victims, who visit police officers seeking help.
The apex police body, according to Sharma, has instructed officers to maintain discipline, show quick response and step up surveillance heeding suggestions from local stakeholders.
