Nation pays tribute to GPK

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, APR 01 -
The 13th day post-death rituals of late Nepali Congress (NC) leader Girija Prasad Koirala were held across the country, with Koirala remembered as a towering political figure of contemporary Nepali politics and an architect of the peace process.

Thousands of supporters, well-wishers, political leaders, and people from all walks of like turned up to pay tribute to Koirala at Pashupati Bankali in the Capital. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal; Bhutanese Prime Minister Jigme Y Thinley; former Prime Ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and Surya Bahadur Thapa; Yoga guru Ram Dev; Kathmandu-based diplomats; heads and members of constitutional bodies; and high ranking government officials paid their last tributes to Koirala. Sujata Koirala--daughter of late Koirala; Deuba; and senior Nepali Congress leaders Sushil Koirala, Ram Chandra Poudel received the general public who went to pay their tributes to Koirala.

Political leaders stressed the need for broader political consensus to fulfill the dream of Koirala and his roadmap of peace. “We are in consultations with each other. The only way to fulfill his dream is to arrive at a political consensus. If we are able to take a call at the right moment, there would be no problem to issue a new statute within the stipulated time,” Prime Minister Nepal said.

UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that his party was serious about peace and the new statute, and was seeking a solution in a new way.

Also, at the event, Deuba said he did not have any problems with the other two senior NC leaders Sushil and Ram Chandra Poudel, although he shared the podium with Sujata at the event. “NC is stronger than ever and there were no such differences for future leadership. We will emerge as the strongest party and unity among the leaders is very strong,” Sujata said.

Bihar CM denied visit

Bihar Chief Minister  (CM) Nitish Kumar could not visit Kathmandu to participate in the 13th day rites of Koirala today because of non-clearance from the Centre, PTI reports said on Thursday.

“Kumar did not go to Kathmandu to attend the Shraadh rites in the absence of the Centre’s permission required for a CM to go to a neighbouring country,” an official spokesman said.

Koirala’s daughter Sujata Koirala had invited the Bihar Chief Minister on March 25 to attend the ‘shraadh’ function.Kumar has earlier been denied permission three times by New Delhi in 2008 when he wanted to visit Nepal to oversee the repair work of the Kusaha embankment of the Koshi River.
