Garbage collection to resume
KATHMANDU, MAR 31 -
Garbage collection in the Kathmandu Valley was halted for the second consecutive day on Wednesday as the locals living near Aletar dumping site in Nuwakot district continued with their protests.
However, officials at Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) said the collection and disposal will resume from Thursday.
A meeting between officials at the Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre (SWMRMC), a government body, and local level all party mechanism at the dumping site area, on Wednesday decided to make an appeal to the agitators to call off the protest.
“Locals there have assured us over phone that they would not hinder garbage disposal,” said Legal Officer at SWMRMC Dipendra Oli.
Another meeting with the agitating locals has been scheduled for Friday morning. Oli said that most of their demands have been met and some other demands were under consideration. “We will sort out all the issues at Thursday’s meeting,” Oli added.
Chattre Deurali and Chaletar locals, who have formed ‘A’ Class Garbage Struggle Committee, announced strike on Monday demanding employment for local youths, construction of roads, electricity and water supply to the villages.
However, officials at the Environment Management Department of KMC, the department responsible for managing the waste, expressed ignorance about resumption of garbage collection. “We are yet to receive an official notice to this effect,” they said. “We will not collect garbage until the agitating groups allow us to dispose the collected garbage at the dumping site,” said a senior official at the department, Rabinman Shrestha.
