Step down:UML to PM
KATHMANDU, MAR 30 -
Pressure has piled on Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal from within his party to step down.
Majority of CPN-UML Central Committee (CC) and Constituent Assembly (CA) members have demanded that the party ask the prime minister to “open ways” for a national unity government.
By Tuesday evening, a total of 70 CC members and a majority of CA members had put their signatures on the proposal demanding that Prime Minister Nepal “create a conducive environment for forming a new national consensus government”.
The CC members will submit the paper bearing signatures to the prime minister and party Chairman Jhalanath Khanal possibly by Thursday, according to UML CC members.
“We started the campaign to replace this government after concluding that it was incapable of breaking the deadlock and completing the constitution within the stipulated time. The deadlock could push the country towards another crisis,” said CA member Rabindra Adhikari.
The signature campaign follows the decision of the last CC meeting, which urged the party leadership to choose any alternative, including formation of a new coalition government for peace and timely statute.
However, sources close to the prime minister said, Nepal, who has intensified consultations with coalition partners, is not in a mood to resign and hand over leadership to other parties. The prime minister’s press adviser Bishnu Rijal ruled out any possibility of Nepal putting in his papers “Leaders from other parties, including Nepali Congress leaders Sher Bahadur Deuba, Suhsil Koirala and others are advising him against quitting.”
Meanwhile, UML leader K.P. Sharma Oli left for New Delhi on Tuesday. He is scheduled to meet prominent Indian leaders during his four-day stay. There are speculations in the party that Oli’s Delhi visit will have a bearing in Kathmandu.
