Show cause on TUTH closure
KATHMANDU, MAR 29 -
The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday issued a show cause order to the government, Dean of the Institute of Medicine (IoM) and others over the closure of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH).
The single bench of Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha decided to this effect after preliminary hearing on the writ petition filed by Consumer Rights Protection Forum (CRPF). In its writ filed on Sunday, CRPF had named Kathmandu District Administration Office as the main defendant, and the prime minister and chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), the Office of the Council of Ministers, Home Ministry, Health Ministry, Education Ministry and nine doctors, including the IoM dean and assistant dean, TUTH director and agitating doctors as other defendants.
The SC also asked all government bodies identified as defendants to show up for the next hearing on April 2 with written clarifications on their failure to address the TUTH row.
On March 25, CRPF had filed a complaint at the Chief District Office (CDO) demanding intervention for the
resumption of essential health services.
“After the CDO failed to respond, we knocked on the SC door,” said CRPF Secretary Jaganath Misra.
Services have been affected since March 15 after the hospital decided to stop admitting patients due to strike over alleged graft in the postgraduate studies in medicine entrance exams. The emergency ward has, however, partially resumed.
Locals on Monday continued to protest and warned the hospital management and agitating doctors and students against continuing the stalemate.
However, agitating doctors and students at IoM said they would continue their strike until the government formed an independent high-level committee to probe irregularities in connection with the entrance exams and suspended office bearers at the Dean’s Office.
