Political wrangling behind TUTH stir
KATHMANDU, MAR 26 -
Though alleged financial irregularities and leakage of Post Graduate entrance question paper was the immediate cause that led to closure of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), political wrangling is the main reason behind the current crisis, say TUTH officials.
The conflict is between office bearers of Institute of Medicine (IoM) nominated by the incumbent CPN-UML-led government and the then UCPN (Maoist)-led government said a high ranking TUTH official. The Dean, Dr. Arun Sayami was nominated by CPN-UML, whereas the Campus Chief, Dr. Ram Prasad Upreti and Dr. Ratindra Nath Shrestha are UCPN (Maoist)’s men.
Following the protest, TUTH has remained closed since March 13. It all started with Campus Chief Dr. Upreti accusing Dr. Sayami and Dr. Shrestha of taking bribe to the tune of Rs. 12 million on March 13 to manipulate the results.
The issue of irregularities in securing seats at IoM came to light after the Janandolan - II in 2006. Because, earlier, Nepali Congress people occupied all the top posts. Tension erupted because of political wrangling, according to Rajan Timilsina of TUTH Employees Association.
Meanwhile, TU on Friday decided to cancel the controversial entrance exam taken by IoM, following discussions between agitating groups.
