Ranabhat acts bridge between king, parties
KATHMANDU, JAN 23 - In a bid to seek a consensus between King Gyanendra and the political parties, Speaker Tara Nath Ranabhat, today met the leaders of various parties.
Ranabhat held separate meetings with Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary of the CPN-UML, Pashupati Shumshere Rana, president of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Amik Sherchan, chairman of the Peoples’ Front Nepal (PFN), Rajendra Mahato, general secretary of the Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandi Devi) and Badri Prasad Mandal, president of the Nepal Sadbhawana Party.
Ranabhat told The Kathmandu Post that he urged the leaders to build consensus in order to settle the current political crisis. "I briefed the party leaders about my recent meeting with the king and told them that the king was positive to go hand in hand with the political parties to resolve the current political stalemate," Ranabhat said. Sherchan said that Ranabhat urged him help build consensus between the king and the parties. "Ranabhat is holding meeting with political parties now to elicit their views and he will later meet the king and brief him," Sherchan said.
Sherchan also said that he told Ranabhat that the restoration of the dissolved House of Representatives could give outlet to the present problem.
A UML source commented Ranabhat’s meeting with Nepal as useless.
According to the source, Nepal expressed disagreement to the proposal put forth by Ranabhat and asked him to obtain consensus from other parties first.Posted on: 2004-01-24 03:28
