7 rebels, one policeman killed in clashes
KATHMANDU, JAN 23 - Security forces today claimed to have killed at least seven Maoists in different parts of the country in the past 24 hours.
The forces claimed that four Maoists, including a member of district people’s government were killed during search operations of the joint security forces in southern parts of Nuwakoat.
Locals, however, claimed that three of the four killed in security action were innocent.
The dead have been identified as member of people’s government Ram Cahndra Rana, Yedu Kumar Mudvari, Rajan Pudasaini and Maniram Mudvari. Security sources claimed that all of them were killed when they were indulged in extortion. Locals say that Yedu Kumar, Rajan and Maniraj were innocents.
The government forces started out search operations in Jiling, Kumari, Chauthe, Belkot and Ratmate areas of Nuwakoat from Tuesday.
Likewise, two Maoists were shot dead at Tityang VDC-5 in Baglung district on Thursday. Sources said they were killed after the rebels hurled socket-bombs at a security patrol.
Another report from Myagdi said that a section commander known as Dinesh Bista was gunned down in a security action. Security officials claimed that Bista was involved in the murder of a soldier at Galeshwor bazaar on Tuesday.
In Tanahun, two Maoists shot dead a head constable of Armed Police Force at Dumre this morning. Head constable Raju Puri was buying newspapers at a newspaper stall when the rebels opened fire.
Eyewitnesses said that the rebels fled the scene follwing the shooting. The busy Prithvi Highway was blocked for half a day after the security personnel began search of the passengers.
In Sankhuwasabha two soldiers and a civilians were injured after a group of Maoists hurled socket bombs at a team of security personnel returning from Tamku to Khandbari. The injured were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.
Condition of the civilian, identified as Rambir Rai who was carrying belongings of the forces, is reported to be critical.Posted on: 2004-01-24 03:25
