Killer tiger of 8 still at large
CHITWAN, JAN 22 - A man eating tiger has killed eight persons at the buffer zone of the Royal Chitwan National Park (RCNP) within a month here. However, the park authorities are unable to track down the killer tiger as of yet.
This has sparked terror among the people in Madi valley and west Chitwan. Tiger menace started in the region with the killing of Tulsi Kafle, 30, by a tiger in Ayodhyapur of Madi valley on December 19last.
Ever since, the tiger has claimed seven lives in separate places in and around the Valley such as Meghauli, Dibyanagar and Kalyanpur.
Tension in the region heightened after the tiger carried away a 15-year-old girl yesterday. The unfortunate girl Mina Pariyar of Baghauda VDC in Madi Valley is the latest victim of the tiger.
Pariyar had gone to the local Someshwor Community Forest to collect grass with two local youths. The tiger carried away Pariyer after hurting a youth while the other escaped unharmed. However, tiger experts hold divergent views behind the incident.
The park was opened for collecting fodder and grass this year. Villagers entering inside the park in thousands each day could have disturbed normal life of tigers. Thus, a tiger could have entered the community forests thereby causing series of human toll, opines Ram Prit Yadav, ex-warden at the park.
"Sometimes, a weak tiger forces itself out from the park when pursued by a stronger one. If it is so, the lush community forests at the park vicinity have become favourable tiger habitats, resulting in recent tragic incidents," said Yadav.
However, Shiva Raj Bhatta, the present warden at the park states that the tiger could be a ferocious man-eater. His conclusion is based on the fact that all the incidents have occurred at the same place.
Whatever be the cause behind the killings , all that the locals in the area want is freedom from the beast lurking in the local community forests.Posted on: 2004-01-23 03:36
