Violations of child rights slammed

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 22 - Executive director of UNICEF, Carol Bellamy, has condemned the appalling violations of the rights of children in times of war, including in Nepal. Addressing the annual UN Security Council meeting on children in armed conflict today, she condemned maiming of children, abduction, attacks on schools and hospitals, and sexual violence against boys and girls, states a statement issued by United Nations Information Centre, Kathmandu here today.
"But as the past year has demonstrated, our efforts so far have fallen short of what is required. From Liberia to Nepal, Congo to Colombia, girls and boys have continued to be caught up in war," said Bellamy adding, "What we have seen in Nepal, for example is that schools have been turned into recruitment centres, military bases and targets. The misuse of schools, their occupation and attacks on them are one of the worst violations of child rights."
The Security Council session follows a report by the Secretary-General condemning state and non-government factions that are currently using child soldiers. The report outlines some worst abuse committees against children in dozens of countries around the world.Posted on: 2004-01-23 03:45
