Schoolgirl leaves home to avoid marriage

PR

HETAUDA, JAN 21 - A 12-year old girl in Devitar of Kakada VDC-4, ran away to her maternal uncle’s house to avoid a marriage fixed by her parents. Geeta Praja, a fourth grader at a local school ran away when she learnt from her teacher that her marriage had been arranged with Rangwa Praja, 19 of Raksingrang VDC-9.
Rangwa was to have married Sarita Praja, 16, Geeta’s elder sister. However, as Sarita had eloped with another boy of her choice from the village, her parents decided to marry off Geeta with the same boy. Aware of the adverse impacts of child marriage, Geeta ran away to her maternal uncle’s house from school, according to Govinda Lama, a local resident.Posted on: 2004-01-22 04:07
