‘No room for Maoist ideology in agitation’

PR

KATHMANDU, JAN 20 - In a bid to popularise their on-going movement against "regression", student organisations today began pamphleteering at private education institutions. However, the campaign was limited to few of the districts outside the valley, according to Nepal Students’ Union (NSU)."In private schools and colleges of the Kathmandu Valley, we will begin our campaign from Wednesday," said NSU general secretary Gagan Thapa.
He said student organisations would also pressure the Kathmandu University, the Purbanchal University and the Pokhara University to formally establish the offices for the Free Students’ Union (FSU)."We have been trying to build-up massive support for our movement," he added.
Meanwhile, reports from Pokhara stated that the All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU) and the NSU organised separate campaigns against regression today following a "minor" misunderstanding between them yesterday.Meanwhile, student organisations refuted charges that the Maoists have infiltrated into their groups in street protests. Earlier on Sunday, Minister for Information and Communications Kamal Thapa in a press meet said that the outlawed Maoists rebels had infiltrated in their groups to carry out streets protests.
Talking to The Post, Gururaj Ghimire, president of NSU outrightly rejected the charges saying that Maoist ideology has no place in the on-going peaceful agitation led by seven student organisations. Seven student organisations are gathering tomorrow afternoon at Ratna Park to "celebrate" what they describe as the "last rites of regression".Posted on: 2004-01-21 03:48
