Woman killed, 7 injured in mine blast
KATHMANDU, JAN 20 - A 55-year-old woman was killed and seven others, including a soldier of the Royal Nepal Army, were injured today in a Maoist-laid landmine blast targeted at security personnel working in road construction in Myagdi district.
Security officials in Myagdi said that Udisuba Buddhuja was killed and seven others were injured when the rebel-Maoists detonated a powerful bomb targeting a contingent of security personnel at Rithabot of the Bhagawati Village Development Committee at about 9 a.m. today.
The rebels ambushed the security personnel on the Baglung-Beni-Jomsom road being built by the Royal Nepal Army for the last four years.
Those injured in the incident have been identified as Tak Bahadur Pun, Kamal Pun, Kesh Narayan Buddhaja, all of Narchyang VDC-4, Meena Garbuja Pun of Shikha VDC, Man Bahadur B.K. of Malkabang VDC-2 and soldier, Sher Bahadur Karki. The civilians were on their way to the district headquarters of Beni. Sources said that condition of the soldier, Meena Garbuja and B.K. is reported to be critical. Udisuba Buddhuja, the mother of Kesh Narayan, died on the way to hospital, said the sources.
The seriously injured soldier and civilians were airlifted to Kathmandu and Pokhara for treatment and three others who sustained minor injuries were admitted to the district hospital.
It is reported that the rebels and the security forces had exchanged fire for about half-an-hour shortly after the landmine explosion. Two Maoist suspects were also arrested from the site of the clash.
Meanwhile, in Gulmi, a Maoist area commander, Hari Kandel, 45, was killed during an encounter at the premises of a primary school at Bakhre Village of the Birbas VDC-1. Two rebels were also arrested from the clash site. The security forces on a patrol rounded up the rebels who had forcibly assembled locals to announce their so-called village people’s government at the school.
Another report from Dailekh said that an underground Maoist cadre in Kalika VDC-5 who had been staying at his home for the last three months committed suicide four days ago after his colleagues pressed him to join the insurgency. He has been identified as Ram Bahadur Dhenga, 24. Locals said that he was fed up with the continued Maoist violence and had been inactive for the last one year.
A report from Manthali, Ramechhap said that the Maoists have claimed responsibility for the murder of Asal Singh Tamang, a resident of Him Ganga VDC-2. Tamang was killed five days ago after his abduction from his home about 10 days ago. Issuing a public statement, the rebels claimed that he was "exterminated" for spying against them.
In Sindhupalchowk, the rebels abducted police head constable Kamal Thapa who was on his way to his father-in-law’s home from Batase Village on Sunday. His whereabouts is unknown, said authorities in Chautara.
A report from Manthali said five Maoists working at various levels surrendered to the district administration office giving up the insurgency. Likewise, two district-level Maoists gave in to the government in Jumla. Jumla Chief District Officer Krishna Shyam Budhathoki said that he would recommend the government to seek appropriate jobs to the rebels renouncing violence.Posted on: 2004-01-21 03:27
