Thapa, Rana up for battle

  • RPP to hold National Council meeting
POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 20 - The Central Committee Meeting of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) today decided to hold party’s National Council (NC) meeting and formed a committee to suggest the date and venue for it within ten days.
The committee headed by party’s treasurer Dipak Bohra has been assigned to verify the signatures of NC members who submitted a written application requesting party chairman Pashupati Shumsher Rana to summon the meeting last Friday.
Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa supporters in the Council are planning to challenge the party’s call for Prime Minister’s resignation.
An insider in the party told The Kathmandu Post that the true job of the Bohra committee is to find out the actual number of Rana supporters in the Council so that the party can take action against Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa.
"If some of the signatures proved to be fake ones and Rana gains confidence about his majority after the probe, the party may take action against Prime Minister based on the Central Disciplinary Committee recommendation (CDC)," the source said.
The CDC and Bohara committees are expected to submit their report on the same day.
The government faction, however, seems confident that the party would face councillors’ pressures and reverse its decision of seeking prime minister’s resignation. "We have decided to challenge the party’s decision at the meeting," said a pro-government member. "So the issue will be decided by voting."
Rana-faction said it was ready to exercise democratic means to endorse the party’s decision at the National Council meeting. "We are confident that the party decision will be endorsed by overwhelming majority," Khem Raj Pandit, Assistant General Secretary of the party said.
Meanwhile, pro-government members in the party were absent in the meeting. " Their absence in the meeting proves that their demand for National Council meeting has no relevance," said Jog Mehar Shrestha, party’s senior leader. "Otherwise how could they be absent at the meeting called to discuss the issue raised by them?" enquired Shrestha.
However, Kamal Thapa, Minister for Information and Communications had told yesterday that they were not informed about the meeting.
The meeting also discussed a report presented by party’s assistant general secretary Khem Raj Pandit on latest political developments. "The report has pointed out positive developments in national politics after the party demanded prime minister’s resignation," said Pandit.
"Party’s decision has also helped to break ice between the king and other political parties and paved way for intra-and inter-party dialogues," Pandit said. "All sides have started talking their ideas to resolve the present crisis."Posted on: 2004-01-21 03:24
