Two-stroke owners riled by govt decision
KATHMANDU, JAN 20 - Owners of two-stoke tempos that have been phased out from valley by a government decision of September 8, 2003 have formed an association to exert pressure on the government to provide them with better alternatives.
"The government’s decision to provide us with the alternative of purchasing taxis and microbuses is impractical," said Kamal Bahadur Pant, President of Kathmandu Valley Tempo Professionals Association, in a statement issued today. "How can the owners of tempos finance transports as expensive as the proposed 4-wheelers," Pant has questioned.
The association has 891 members, all of whom have serious grievances against the government decision. A group of transport entrepreneurs submitted their signatures to the Ministry of Environment on November 26, 2003, to review the decision.
"Allow us to purchase 2-stroke tempos that qualify under Nepal Transport Pollution Standard-1999. Sending 891 transport entrepreneurs to the streets begging for employment with the indirect way of asking them to invest beyond their capabilities is unfair," stated Pant. The association plans to stage public protest if the government does not come up with measures more convenient to the transport entrepreneurs.Posted on: 2004-01-21 03:21
