Govt urges India to monitor un document ~ ~ d Nepali workers
KATHMANDU, JAN 20 - The government has officially requested Indian side to tightly monitor the outflow of un document ~ ~ d Nepali workers flying abroad through international airports in India.
A senior government official told The Kathmandu Post that the government made such request to India following reports that a large number of un document ~ ~ d Nepali workers were flying abroad through major Indian cities that include New Delhi, Kokata, Mumbai and Chennai.
Officials also believe that various international airports in India are the most safe places for un document ~ ~ d Nepali workers to fly for foreign employment due mainly to the free border movement.
"Since a number of un document ~ ~ d workers have been reported to face hardship as a result of fake employment agreement, we are now working to scale down such malpractice," said a highly placed government official.
"We have urged India to support in tightening such agents and un document ~ ~ d workers as they have been using Indian international airports to escape from the Nepali authorities," he added.
The source further added that the recent news claiming a number of Nepali workers to be working as security guards in war-ravaged Iraq has prompted the government for the latest move.
"The government has restricted Iraq as employment destination. But, we later knew that a large number of people were making their way to Iraq via Indian airports," the source added.
"And hence, the government had to officially ask for help from the India side for the tight scrutiny of un document ~ ~ d Nepali workers who aspire to fly abroad through Indian
cities."
An independent report estimates the number of "illegal" Nepali workers at over four hundred thousand, all of them believed to fly through Indian airports.
The figure of document ~ ~ d workers, however, is only around three hundred and fifty thousand, according to the official data.Posted on: 2004-01-21 03:16
