Officials, farmers chase away bank officials

POST REPORT

KAPILVASTU, JAN 20 - Agitated officials of Maha Laxmi Sugar Mill and the local sugarcane farmers have chased away the officials of the banks by hurling stones, who had come here to take over the mill.
The incident took place when the officials from various banks, which were not paid back their loans, reached the spot to hand over the operation of the mills to Rohit Groups for a period of three months.
However, the police stationed along the area took control of the situation later on. The mill owes the dues amounting to around Rs 800 million to the banks.
The sugar cane farmers said that they took the furious step, as the banks decided to hand over the mill to Rohit Group before the mill could pay for their sugarcanes.
They said that both the Indian and local farmers have not received Rs 80 million for the sugarcanes that they had sold to the mill for the last three years.
Talking to The Kathmandu Post, Indra Bikram Prajuli of Nepal Industrial Development Corporation Ltd said that the banks attempted to take the control of the mill as it did not repay the debts one way or another.
However, Birendra Kanaudiya, Proprietor of Maha Laxmi Sugar Mill said that he could not hand over the mill to Rohit Group right now, since he had already made investment required for the operation of the mill this season.
"I am ready to hand over the mill after this season," he added.
On the other hand, the Indian farmers have warned of halting the supply of the sugarcanes to the mill, if it does not make payment by 22 January.Posted on: 2004-01-21 03:17
