DHARAN, JAN 18 - HIV-infected persons visiting the BP Koirala Institute of Health Science (BPKHIS) in Dharan complain that the physicians there give them mental torture.
"As soon as we were tested HIV/AIDS positive, the doctors at the BPKMS mistreat us", patients visiting the hospital said. A 26-year-old youth that tested HIV positive was asked to go elsewhere soon after the examination of his blood.
Chairman of Dharan Positive, Naresh Shrestha told The Kathmandu Post that the doctors also made reports public affecting the youth’s family members.
Shrestha alleged that instead of showing compassion to such patients, the physicians treat them with contempt. "They also publicise the reports based on single tests and give mental torture to the families as well as the victims."
Shrestha further said he and his colleagues, who have tested HIV positive, have been repeatedly mistreated in the hospital. Somendra Chhetri, who similarly reported to the hospital for his health check-up was found to be HIV positive. But the doctors and nurses deserted him as soon as his report proved to be HIV positive.
Chettri said that the doctors checking his pulse instantly stepped back in horror when he informed them that he was HIV positive. Some victims allege that the doctors carelessly prescribe various drugs and keep them in isolation and refuse to go anywhere near them.
Dharan Positive said that both physicians and society treat HIV-positive patients with contempt. "Doctors should not treat them like this." The organisation of HIV-positive persons has urged the hospital not to disclose the report on the basis of single tests.Posted on: 2004-01-19 04:18
