Tryst with lover boy

Damaru Lal Bhandari

JAN 18 - The week gone by certainly was an eyeopener from a number of viewpoints. Actually it was the bombshell coming from the CPN-UML in the form of what has been identified as road map, which opened the eyes wider than ever before. There is no end to surprises as long as we have the institution of monarchy and Communists around.
The old saying that those on the left and right could actually share the same ground, too, stands vindicated. You can say bed, if you will. But more of that in the subsequent phase since what suffices now is the road map in question certainly does not bode well for the continued unity of purpose among the members of the five-party alliance.
Given the telltale sign, many have predicted chinks in the alliance already sooner or later. Things could be said to have set rolling following the Lucknow retreat between rebel and CPN-UML leaders. For those into continued regression the road map, of course, is the latest shot in the arms and not an isolated incident at all.
For those who are not in the know, it reminds one of the bitter truths associated with the Nepalese Communist movement. As anyone who has insight into the dreary world of calumnious scandal would testify, the Left parties here have tended to work in coordination with the reigning monarch.
Those who had any doubts about the motive of the left parties while the nation went to the referendum in 1979 are advised to analyse the latest turnaround effected by the party vis-à-vis the movement and the relationship with the institution of monarchy.
The road map could be said to be the latest gift from the Communists to the reigning monarch. It has been so crafted that it has all the ingredients to bring about schism between the CPN-UML and other members of the alliance. Mind you, its King Gyanendra who stands the chance of having the last laugh, not Madhav Kumar Nepal.
As to how the road map puts an end to the five-party alliance becomes evident from the fact that the CPN-UML has understandably deleted the demand concerning revival of the House of Representatives. Anyone who insists that the demand had come from the NC and was thus deleted is wrong.
In fact, the demand was of the electorates who stood without representation following the dissolution. NC President Girija Prasad Koirala has been merely ventilating the same as a true representative of the people. May the old man live long enough to restore the system, which has scuttled following a calumnious scandal and conspiracy.
By the same token, if anyone who has not yet analysed the move of the party in bad taste should go back to 1979 when the party behaved in such an anomalous manner that many interpreted the ulterior motive as part of the tacit understanding with monarch.
Consider the beautifully crafted excuses, which came from the Left parties in 1979: We had notified the party workers to boycott but the letters did not reach them. There is yet another beautifully woven tapestry surrounding the party’s policy concerning referendum which is much more convincing.
In fact, those who have enough insight into what went into the botched referendum, the Left parties, including the CPN-UML, of course, had decided to not to vote for the multiparty system in what was interpreted as the instance of the party finding nothing wrong even if the Panchayat system is not voted out.
This explains the current anomalous behavior of the leaders, which belong to the CPN-UML. They agreed to the 18-point agenda in all sincerity. It appeared as if they were diehard revolutionaries from the textbook. One wondered why the nation had not made rapid strides onward with leaders like them to lead?
One also wondered why would the vibrant people left to be knocked down here and there for no apparent reasons with leaders like them to lead the nation? The fact that the party was once led by firebrand Madan Bhandari was enough to convince many including yours truly to believe what they said every now and then.
There were times when many vouched to vote for them for their romantic slogans bordering very nearly on the republican order. The famous lines, which came from Bhandari exhorting the reigning monarch to contest poll opposite him, still ring in many people’s ears. However they could now be said to have lost their relevance given the policy of surrenderism which has gone into play now.
Given the militancy demonstrated by the leaders belonging to the CPN-UML, there were times when one felt that countdown had perhaps begun for the decline and fall of the system. Many were told to train the ears to hear the danger bell ringing all too merrily and signaling the beginning of the end of the constitutional monarchy.
Those who have visited the biggest betrayal in their life could stand unshaken by betrayal of this magnitude, though. But not those who have chased the Utopian dreams handed out by people beginning from Marx and Engel in all sincerity.
There are simply too many cadres of the party who do not fall back from claiming that the CPN-UML would one day fight for a republican order fully unaware, of course, of what kind of wind blows at the very top.
Given the immense stake and the need to explain the issues involved, the best thing one could do is break down what is unfolding on its own on the political front, given the intense heat turned on by the reigning monarch. The five-party alliance has been insisting on collective audience but that did not happen. One could say Nepal walked on all fours for one-on-one with King Gyanendra.
The entire nation watched on with bated breath while the tryst lasted quite a while between Nepal and King Gyanendra. There is nothing more than the obvious to write home about concerning the fastest trek to Nagarjun and back.
Excuse me for a wee bit salacious analogy but the long and short of it all is that an immoral woman in the CPN-UML does not simply seem to mind going for occasional trysts with an insolent lover boy, while the poor husband (read members of the electorate) tirelessly chases her thinking that she is the very epitome of purity, chastity and virginity all folded into one. That is given, of course, the party had married with the electorate in 1990. Someone has rightly said not all wives are honest.Posted on: 2004-01-19 04:29
