New acquisitions for Palace

  • 3 luxury cars worth Rs 142 m
POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 18 - Royal Palace is all set to get three new British-made luxury cars.
According to a highly placed government source, government has already released Rs 142 million for the purchase of the new cars and Letter of Credit (LC) has also been opened to import them.
The palace is importing one Rolls-Royce limousine, one Jaguar and one yet unnamed luxury car, according to the source.
The Ministry had initially released Rs 137 million but it increased the amount to Rs 142 million since the price of the cars shot up due to depreciation of Nepali currency vis-à-vis Sterling Pound.
The released money is on top of government’s budgeted expenditure of Rs 329 million allotted for Royal Palace in the current fiscal year.
"Since the palace demanded the money, the government had no option but to arrange it," said the source. He, however, did not disclose from which fund the money was released.
When asked to comment, a royal palace official denied having any knowledge. "I have no knowledge about it, because my department does not oversee all this (import business)," said Yogeshwor Karki, Principal Press Secretary at the Narayanhity Royal Palace.
Two years ago, the source said, the government had released Rs 87 million from its non-budgeted fund to import cars for the palace.Posted on: 2004-01-19 04:06
