Maoists continue abductions, atrocities
- Public life paralysed, schools affected most
KATHMANDU, JAN 18 - Maoist rebels murdered Asal Man Tamang, a Nepali Congress (NC) activist of Himganga VDC-1 in Ramechhap district on Thursday. The rebels had abducted Tamang six days ago from his house and tortured him to death, according to police.
Our reports from Rolpa said that life in Liwang, the district headquarters is paralysed due to blockade by Maoist rebels for the past three weeks. The rebels have hung around a one-metre long red cloth in Sulichaur, the entry point to Liwang, across the Bhaluwang-Pyuthan section of the road.
This has created panic among people in Liwang and the surrounding VDCs. No vehicles have plyed along the road for three weeks and this has led to the shortage of consumer goods in Liwang.
However, a Maoist activist named Bhimsen expressed ignorance over the blockade. Stating that he is deployed in neighbouring Pyuthan district and is presently at his house on leave, Bhimsen said that his party has no policy of such a blockade.
Our reports from Dailekh said that teaching-learning activities have been adversely affected at a primary school in Odanaku VDC-5 of the district following the construction of a Village People Committee (VPC) building by the Maoists.
School studies have been hampered ever since the Maoists constructed the VPC building at the premises of local Janata Primary School some six months. This is more so because Maoists organise two to three programmes a month at the school ground, according to a guardian.
Another report from Dailekh said that teachers and students from schools in rural parts of the district have congregated at the district headquarters following a Maoist ruling.
The Maoists have ruled for the mandatory presence of a member from each family and the students and teachers from each school at their programme of declaring Karnali Zone as their controlled area.
In yet another report from Dailekh, Khadga Bahadur Thapa, the secretary Chairman of Badlamarj VDC resigned from the post. Thapa was released recently from the Maoist captivity.
