KATHMANDU, JAN 17 - A day after the army spokesman suspected Maoists’ infiltration in street protests carried out by seven student organisation, one of the major partners in the student alliance—the Nepal Students’ Union—today refuted the army’s claim.Issuing a press statement in the capital today, Gagan Kumar Thapa, general secretary of the NSU claimed that the street protest was going on under the leadership of the seven student organisations. "We have taken this as a new strategy of the army to oppress the students’ movement," Thapa said.Army Spokesman Deepak Gurung addressing a press conference on Thursday at the Royal Nepalese Army headquarters expressed suspicions of Maoists’ infiltration in the protests in the light of strident slogans.The cabinet meeting also today discussed the suspected infiltration by the Maoists in the protests especially regarding the large-scale vandalism of government vehicles recently, a cabinet source said.Posted on: 2004-01-18 02:38
