Substandard seeds leave land barren

POST REPORT

DANG, JAN 17 - As a result of distribution of sub standard seeds of Crops Diversification Programme (CDP), the farming lands of Duruwa VDC have remained barren.
The farmers said that as the potato seeds distributed by CDP could not grow, their fields have turned to barren.
Earlier, CDP had distributed around 18 quintals of seeds to as many as 36 farmers, with an objective of increasing their earnings through the plantation of improved potato seeds.
According to the farmers, around 50 percent of such seeds did not even germinate.
Some of the farmers have, meanwhile, planted potatoes later, purchasing seeds on their own. But, the farmers, who are unable to purchase the seeds, have forced to leave their lands barren.
"Several farmers like me have fallen victims to the distribution of sub-standard seeds of CDP," lamented Tula Ram Chaudhary, a local farmer.
Under the programme, a total of Rs 1.4 million was allocated for the farmers of Duruwa for cultivating various types of improved seeds.
The farmers also pointed out that they, so far, have not got any technical assistance and other facilities from CDP, though it had earlier assured to provide them.
"All what we have got from the programme is only sub standard seeds," lamented they.
Abdul Rheman, Chief of District Agriculture Development Office (DADO), meanwhile, said that after the farmers filed a complaint with the office in this regard, it had monitored the field.
"It has found during the monitoring that the farmers have been deprived of enjoying benefits as per the agreement done with them earlier," he said.
He added that the office has been preparing to apprise the centre of the problems facing the farmers.Posted on: 2004-01-18 02:33
