Five Maoists killed in encounters

  • Security forces kill innocent in Gulmi

KATHMANDU, JAN 17 - At least five Maoists were killed in separate encounters in different parts of the country. In Gulmi, security personnel were accused of killing an innocent, according to reports.
A report from eastern hill district of Sangkhuwasabha stated that security personnel shot dead four Maoists during a search operation in the Hatiya Village Development Committee on Thursday. The government forces also recovered explosives and Maoist literature from the Maoist hideout.
Those killed in the security action have been identified as chief of Hatiya village people’s government Panden Bhote, Namban Jyak Bhote, Jewa Bhote and Kumar Rai whose address could not be determined. The VDC is located about 65 km north of Kandhbari, the district headquarters.A combined team of security personnel was mobilised toward the VDC to provide security to the devotees taking holy baths on the confluence of the Arun and Barun Rivers.
The security officials claimed that the slain rebels were involved in smuggling arms and explosives from Tibet through Kimathanka pass. But the claims could not be verified independently.
Likewise, a report from Udaypur said that a member of the Maoist district people’s government was killed and six others including two injured were arrested when the security forces launched search operation at Rupatar VDC-7 on Thursday.The slain Maoist has been identified as Bibisa, nick-named as Rita. The injured rebels, Kanchhi Lama and Bedmaya Tamang, were airlifted to Dharan for treatment.
Meanwhile, a report from Palpa stated that security forces shot dead an innocent man, Gomane Kami, during a search operation in Gulmi’s Arkhabang VDC-4. Locals said that landless Kami was apolitical.In Syangja, a group of Maoists looted Rs 140,000 in cash from an Indian armyman, Rudra Bahadur Chhetri, at Nwara Bhanjyang of the Putalibazaar Municipality on Tuesday.
Chhetri, who was on a two-week home leave, was carrying cash belonging to his friends working in the Indian Army. "They (rebels) looted all the cash I had at gunpoint except for Rs 1,000 for my expenses to get home," he said.
Another report from Butwal said that a group of Maoists today set fire on a jeep carrying alcohol in Suryapura VDC and destroyed alcohol worth Rs 50,000.Posted on: 2004-01-18 02:41
