India’s ban on herbs, pulse fall heavy

NEPALGUNJ, JAN 17 - With the ban on imports of Nepali herbs and pulses by India, the local exporters of these goods have suffered huge losses.
The local businessmen said that the officials at the Indian Customs Office do not permit to export these commodities via bordering Indian customs point, saying that they are ordered block the flow from the high command.
Earlier, the herbs and pulses produced in the mid-western region of the country were export through the same point. India has, however, given permission to export these commodities through other border points.
Talking to The Kathmandu Post an official at the Indian border point conceded that Quarantine Office, based in Lucknow had written a letter them to stop the import from 1 January.
"We are adversely affected due to the Indian decision," said Nanda Lal Agrawal, Proprietor of Jayanti Pulse Industry.
With the prohibition of Indian government, those businessmen who have already got permission from Indian government for the export of Nepali herbs and pulse have also been unable to export these commodities.
"India has now stopped the export of these commodities going against the decision it had itself taken earlier," said Rajesh Jain, President of Nepal Herbs Entrepreneurs Association.
The local food traders have, meanwhile, apprised Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) of the problems emerged after the prohibition by India and urged it to take initiative to resolve the problems.
Officials at the Quarantine Check Post of India, on the other hand, said that a meeting, which is going sit in New Delhi within next two weeks, would take decision in this regard.
