UML scouting foreign shores for roadmap nod

Ghanashyam Ojha

KATHMANDU, JAN 17 - The CPN-UML is secretly preparing to elicit support from the international community for its recently publicised roadmap aimed at resolving the current political stalemate.
A high level UML source told The Kathmandu Post that the party leaders were busy preparing for the visit of party General Secretary, Madhav Kumar Nepal to Sweden on the third week of February.
Although Nepal has been invited by the Swedish left party, he would meet with the government officials and ministers and try to solicit support on his party’s proposal to settle the current political crisis in Nepal. It is also learnt that Nepal would also visit the Scandinavian countries Norway, Finland, Denmark and other European countries where he would present his party’s views. The source said that the UML would lobby with the European countries to put pressure upon the government and the king for early resolution of the current crisis.
"But the details of the programme have not yet been worked out," the source said.
The UML source also said that the party was coordinating with Marianne Eriksson and Kalle Larsson, members of the European and Swedish parliaments respectively, who are currently in Nepal.
The UML roadmap demands an immediate dismissal of the current Surya Bahadur Thapa government. It also proposes the formation of an all-party government, which will hold a round table conference of all political forces including the Maoists. The round table conference would then, form an interim government in order to hold parliamentary polls. The new parliament would then draft a new constitution, the roadmap has stressed.
It is also believed that the Norwegians are interested to broker peace between the government and the Maoists.
The Norwegians brokered the current cease-fire between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka. They also engineered the famous Oslo agreement between Israel and Palestine in 1992.
The party has sent another group of leaders to Ireland in order to study about the Irish conflict. The UML leaders Sankar Pokharel, Jhala Nath Khanal, Ishwor Pokharel and Bhim Rawal flew for Ireland today as a part of a delegation which is coordinated by National Peace Campaign, an NGO, and sponsored by DFID, British development agency.
The UML has already held separate meetings with other political parties including the Nepali Congress, RPP, Peoples’ Front Nepal, Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandi Devi), Nepali Congress (Democratic) and shared its roadmap with the parties.Posted on: 2004-01-18 02:39
