Bomb explosion inside bus leaves 3 dead

DHANKUTA, JAN 17 - Two civilians and a soldier of the Royal Nepal Army were killed today after a bomb, reportedly left behind by Maoist suspects, went off inside a passenger bus stopped for security check at Salleri.
Four other civilians were also injured, one of them seriously, in the explosion which occurred after most of the passengers got off the bus for security check and a soldier entered it and opened a bag left behind by one of the passengers.
Those killed in the explosion have been identified as lance Corporal Nagendra Katuwal of Mahendra Nagar in Sunsari, bus staff Jabin Rai of Bhojpur and passenger Bhupal Bhandari of Muga VDC-2 in Dhankuta. Security officials said they died instantly.
The injured were rushed to the BP Koirala Institute of Health Science for treatment. The busy Kosi Highway remained closed for three hours.
A security official said that the Maoists had placed the bomb inside the bus with registered number Ko 1 Kha 1391 that left Basantapur for Dharan. Soon after the incident, the security personnel took all the people travelling in the bus under control for interrogations.Posted on: 2004-01-18 02:38
