Three universities to run population, gender studies

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 17 - Three universities will soon run training and academic programmes on population, gender and development studies with the support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Tribhuvan University, Purbanchal University, Pokhara University and UNFPA have already agreed on to conduct training and academic programmes in a bid to produce efficient human resources in the country. This was disclosed here today at a programme organised by the universities in collaboration with UNFPA. Speaking at the programme, Dr Shankar Prasad Sharma, chief guest and Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission (NPC), opined that the gender issues were complex and needed collaborative efforts from all the concerned individuals, organisations and academic institutions. Toran Bahadur Karki, Vice Chancellor of Purbanchal University said that since population is a dynamic issue, the curriculum related to population studies should be dynamic and flexible. He also pointed out that the curriculum should not merely mention a two-page course outline but also include classroom and other activities.
Dr Govinda Prasad Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University stressed on the development of education to considerably stop the flow of students going to other countries in pursuit of higher studies owing to various reasons. He also stressed on the need for collaborative efforts and concerted actions among all sections concerned for the development of the entire education sector.
Dr Ramsharan Pathak from Tribhuvan University, Bidhan Acharya from Purbanchal University and Yagya Prasad Subedi from Pokhara University presented the curricula of the proposed programmes.
According to the organisers, Tribhuvan University will run a 30-day training programme on population, gender and development studies whilst Pokhara University and Purbanchal University will run one-year and two-year Master programme on the same respectively.Posted on: 2004-01-18 02:44
