Substandard Indian oil floods local market

MAHOTTARI, JAN 16 - Despite the fact that inferior Indian oil enters through the porous Nepal-India border and openly sold in local market, the administration here is effortless to curb the smuggling.
Massive quantity of low-standard Indian oil regularly penetrates the local Nepali market due to loose border checks; and sold to Nepali consumers. The overflow of the low-quality oil is equally prone to risk the public health.
As per the Food Act of the country, the consumable products, first of all, need to be tested in food laboratory before they enter the markets. But oil from India is freely sold even without going under initial tests.
Lately, Revenue Patrol Team of Royal Nepali Army had confiscated various brands of substandard Indian oil that were smuggled through the porous border. According to officials, the seized brands of oil -Dhara, Shyam and Lotus, among others, were found contaminated.
Manohar Rimal, chief at local customs office also confirmed of many Indian brands oil containing unhygienic contents.
"We are soon destroying almost 150 liters of Indian brands oil that were confiscated in a recent raid," added Rimal.
Talking to The Kathmandu Post, local doctor at Jaleshwor Hospital said that the consumption of substandard Indian oil is prone to health hazard.
"First the consumer will witness swelling of ones body, which later on, brings more disorders, eventually resulting deaths in some cases,’ he informed.Posted on: 2004-01-17 03:38
