Ranjit’s "smoke" paintings enthral Pokhrelis

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 16 - Artist Krishna Gopal Ranjit organised a solo exhibition of more than 36 of his paintings last week in this panoramic city of Pokhara. He received warm respect and applause here.
His paintings are symbolic. His canvasses seem to show the viewers attached to his or her own wheel of life: sorrow and happiness, light and darkness and emotional attachment with nature.
What made him passionate for painting?
"I wouldn’t have become an artist had I not seen Mount Machhapuchhre so closely when I was a toddler," said the 70-years-old elder. The snow-clad mountain range reflecting on the Phewa Tal left deep impressions on his mind, and he recaptured its beauty in tranquillity.
The virgin peak of Machhapuchhre, he says, was his sources of artistic inspiration. Ranjit is acclaimed for his extraordinary skills in using smoke in his paintings. Altogether 54 paintings, including oil and acrylic, were displayed at the show.
"He’s not only a lover of nature, but also an experimentalist," says renowned writer Saru Bhakta. "The medium of smoke in his painting is perhaps the first experiment and it should have a patent right." The smoke paintings were the centre of attraction in Pokhara.
Ranjit’s paintings depict his artistic genius that he has sustained for over 50 years. He strives to define the meaning of life, gazing at the golden rays of the setting sun on Machhapuchhre. The nostalgia of the past is the theme of his artworks.
"Life is, perhaps, like the setting sun," says Ranjit. But he is still glowing through his great paintings. The setting sun, the snowy mountains being slowly hidden in the dark are his favourite symbols in his works that rightfully represent his own advancing life.
But his paintings will remain immortal like the virgin peak that always fascinates people. Posted on: 2004-01-17 03:49
