Alliance proposed for renewable energy stakeholders

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 16 - In the present context of depleting fossil fuels and other natural sources of non-renewable energy, experts and representatives of institutions related to energy sectors met today in Kathmandu with a purpose to establish an alliance among the stakeholders of renewable energy and promote it in a sustainable way.
The programme entitled "Workshop for the Establishment of Alliance among Renewable Energy Stakeholders" organised by the Forum for Sustainable Development-Nepal (FSD-Nepal) was supported by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC).
Dr. Tara Nath Bhattarai, Visiting Professor at the Centre for Environmental Studies (CES) at the Institute of Engineering, who had developed a tentative draft proposal on alternative energy alliance, presented it at the programme for group discussion.
The proposal, among others, contained title options, objectives, rationale, scope of work, management and funding requirement of the alliance.
During his presentation, he said that the existing definition of alternative energy in Nepal Gazette was not adequate to embrace the entire concept of alternative energy, and also that the existing mechanisms were not sufficient to address the issue.
Dr. Minendra Rijal, former member of National Planning Commission (NPC), who chaired the presentation session at the programme, said that it was necessary to develop the multidimensional aspects of energy.
"Light for life" everywhere was his stress, and he emphasised on the development and accessibility of renewable and alternative energy to every single household in the country.
Supporting universal matriarchal society, Dr. Yubaraj Khatiwada, member of NPC, said, "Until mother’s energy is promoted, the current problems are to remain forever."
According to him, a mother’s energy is one that lights the rural home and hearth whereas a father’s energy lights up urban luxurious bungalows and runs big industries.
He also opined that competitive programmes should be taken on complementary basis.
Two discussion groups were formed at the programme to discuss on the draft proposal.Posted on: 2004-01-17 03:58
