1 soldier, cop each, 2 civilians die in clashes
KATHMANDU, JAN 16 - An army personnel was killed, while two other soldiers and one policeman sustained serious injuries from a Maoist ambush today morning at Chaimalay-3, south of the capital. More than a dozen security personnel were injured in the same incident.
The incident took place at 10:20 today morning while the joint team of army and police was returning from a patrol at Ghorlaykhola Nursery Danda Kalimatitol in Chaimalay-3.
The dead soldier has been identified as Ranodeep Sitang Magar. The dead and all the injured were airlifted from the incident site to Birendra Army Hospital.
According to Khim Bahadur Ghartimagar, sub-inspector at Pharping Police Station, besides the ambush laid at three places at Chaimalay, Sisnari and Kulikhane, at 10-metre gaps
along the alternative road to Hetauda via Dachinkali, the Maoists had also attacked the joint force with socket bombs and shelling.
After the firing between the two sides that lasted for about 20 minutes, the Maoists fled towards the nearby Okhalay forest. The extent of loss on the Maoists side is not yet confirmed. Various materials used by Maoists were also recovered at the site.
Similarly, one policeman was killed and another injured when a group of five armed Maoists opened fire at policemen on duty at the main gate of the Eastern Regional Administration Office, Dhankuta today afternoon at around 3:30. According to security sources, Chandra Bahadur Khadka, who sustained bullet wounds in the chest, abdomen and thigh died while he was being taken to the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences. Krishna Bahadur Limbu, head constable, who was injured in the incident, is undergoing treatment in Ilam.
A report from Parbat district says the 73-year-old president of Nepali Congress of constituency No.-2, Haridutta Tiwari was killed in Sankarpokhari-4 at 8 o’clock yesterday night by a group of four Maoists.
Meanwhile, another report from Bajura says that an eight-year-old boy, Mangal Thapa of Dumri, ward-2 of Bramtola VDC died yesterday evening at around 5:30, after he was hit by a stray bullet that pierced his stomach.
