Crown Prince opens MCT conf

KATHMANDU, JAN 16 - His Royal Highness Crown Prince Paras Bir Bikram Shah Dev inaugurated an international conference on "Multipurpose community telecentre: Networking and future aims" amidst a function here today.
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Himani Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah was also present on the occasion.
The seminar is being organised with the objective of holding discussions on establishment of information centres in the villages against the backdrop of people in the rural areas not having access to information technology (IT) services despite the accessibility of such services in the urban areas since a few years back.
Taking part in the two-day seminar organised by Nepal Library Association and the Nepal
National Library are 150 persons from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan as well as Nepal.
Addressing the function, Minister for Education and Sports, Hari Bahadur Basnet, said that His Majesty's Government has set a target in the 10th Plan of establishing 1,500 community information centres.
On the occasion, former vice chairman of the National Planning Commission (NPC) Dr Narayan Khadka, regional advisor of UNESCO, Susane Angir, Dasrath Thapa and other speakers expressed the belief that the information centres would be useful in providing information on topics related to health education, information technology and the internet in rural areas.Posted on: 2004-01-17 03:57
