Chaudhari brothers turn models for ex-Kamaiyas

MALAKHETI, (KAILALI), JAN 15 - Kalu Ram Chaudhari and Dashi Ram Chaudhari, two ex-Kamaiya brothers of Malakheti in Kailali district have turned into models for other ex-Kamaiya families who are reeling under hand-to-mouth circumstances.
Freed three years ago, the two brothers now run several businesses earning them hundreds of thousands of rupees. And this was all due to their own efforts and willpower.
The brothers live in a joint family of eight members wherein everybody except two school-going children is engaged in family businesses.
The brothers own a tile industry, a banana orchard, vegetable and fish farms, a provisional shop and a communication centre. All these undertakings are thriving well besides providing employment to other ex-Kamaiyas. All these are located in their 10 katthas of land. They also employ other ex-Kamaiyas in the peak seasons.
Presently, their business generates around 10,000 rupees a day resulting in hundreds of thousands of rupees a year.
The siblings believe in the principle of personal involvement in business. "Mostly, we’re personally involved in every business," said Dashi Ram.
Tiles produced by the Chaudhari brothers are gaining fast popularity in Dhangadi and Mahendranagar.
"Just supply good quality produces for reasonable profits," said Kalu Ram. "We’re receiving orders from far-off places and finding it hard to fulfil all of them."
Recently, the Chaudhari brothers launched a communication centre at the cost of Rs. 25,000, which is also doing good business.
The brothers were freed as other Kamaiyas. But they built their destiny by utilising the training skills taught by some NGOs. They borrowed capital and launched the provisional shop and started cash crop farming in their small land.
Not surprisingly, unlike the first year of their freedom, these ex-Kamaiyas are celebrating this year’s Maghi festival in a fitting manner.Posted on: 2004-01-16 03:07
