Seven rebels, cop killed in clashes

  • Army seize 100 sacks of rice in Nawalparasi

KATHMANDU, JAN 14 - At least seven Maoist-rebels and a policeman were killed in different parts of the country in the past 12 hours and a group of rebels looted arms from security personnel in Khotang district, reports said.
A report from Dhanusha stated that a policeman was killed and two others, including a junior police officer, were seriously injured when a group of rebels opened fire at them at Mithileshwor Chowk of the Tarapatti VDC this afternoon.
The slain policeman has been identified as Jhalak Bahadur Mahat. The injured policemen were rushed to the Janakpur Zonal Hospital for treatment.
Police claimed that one of the attackers was also killed and four others were injured in the firefight. But the claim could not be confirmed independently.
Meanwhile, in Gorkha, three Maoists were killed today during an encounter with the security forces at Bhuk-Bhuke near Arughat. Local security officials said the rebels were killed at a time when they were preparing to ambush a joint team of security personnel on a patrol in the area. The slain rebels are yet to be identified, said authorities.
Two Maoists were killed in Khotang’s Jalpa Village Development Committee on Tuesday morning, according to security sources. They have been identified as Kamala Karki of Pokali Village of Okhaldhunga and Namraj Moktan whose address is yet to be established. Sources claimed that they were killed during an encounter.
Another woman rebel was killed in a security action that occurred in Kavre’s Gothpani area on Sunday, according to a report from Manthali, the district headquarters of Ramechhap. She has been identified as Saraswoti Yonzan, who was Ramechhap district secretary of Maoist-aligned All Nepal National Independent Students Union.
Meanwhile, a report from Khotang said that a group of armed-rebels snatched away six modern weapons from security personnel in the Mahure jungle of the Nunthala VDC. Earlier, the security personnel had clashed with the rebels for three hours before giving up the arms. A local security official also confirmed the fact.
In Rautahat, the rebel-Maoists entered the site-office of Bagmati Irrigation Project in the Santapur VDC and set six motorbikes on fire last night, according to police. The rebels also took a bike along with them, taking two security guards under control at gunpoint.
A report from Sunsari said that a group of suspected Maoists looted Rs 17,000 from eight small businessmen at Inaruwa yesterday evening. The rebels also exploded a powerful bomb aiming at the late king Birendra’s statue. The explosion caused minor damage to its gate and walls.
The rebels in Manthali freed five members of a family from their captivity today. The parents and wife of Ram Kumar Khatri, a teacher, were abducted after Khatri refused to accept a woman as his wife despite the fact that she had conceived a baby out of illicit relations with him.
Meanwhile, a report from Nawalparasi stated that army personnel today seized 100 sacks full of rice, reportedly collected by the rebels, from the house of Nandalal Sapkota at Amarpuri VDC-6. The army also arrested Sapkota and another local, Bishnu Chapagain, for investigation. It is believed that the rebels were preparing to sell it in a local market.
