Wild elephant terror continues in Rautahat

RAUTAHAT, JAN 14 - The killer wild elephant has claimed one more life in Judibela VDC of Rautahat district today damaging two houses. The person killed by the elephant has been identified as Raj Kishor Rai of Paurai VDC-7. The elephant had attacked Rai at Purbatola of Judibela VDC, while he was on his way home from Chandranigahapur bazaar this morning, according to Krishna Bahadur Rai, the victim’s brother.
The elephant also destroyed houses of Anutha Chaudhari and Chhathuram Chaudhari. The same elephant had killed Sher Bahadur Bamjan of Judibela VDC yesterday.
Meanwhile, RSS reports that a wild elephant is reported to have caused damage to property worth lakhs of rupees by bringing down half a dozen houses in various wards of Arjundhara VDC of Jhapa distrit last night.
The elephant that is said to have entered the village from the nearby Jukekhadi community forest brought down the house of Somnath Dahal in ward No-1 of Arjundhara VDC and gobbled down paddy stock of the family.
Likewise, others affected by the ravage of the wild animal are Ram Prasad Dhungel, Somnath Pokharel, Bhakta Bahadur Bhujel and Goma Chaudhary.
Havoc by the wild creatures have become a regular feature every night in Arjundhara, Budhabare and Khudunabari VDCs of the district, it is learnt.
Similarly, in Sarlahi, the wild elephants which entered into the district from Chitwan and Udayapur destroyed 14 houses and property of thousands of rupees, rice, maize, banana and sugarcane crops.
The elephants, which had come through Jhapa and Udayapur, have also injured Tulsi Prasad Bhattarai of Harion ward No 1 Chapini.
The police of Area Police Post, Haripur, had to fire 12 rounds in the air to control the elephants, according to Sub-Inspector Bhim Oli.
Four guide elephants were mobilised to control the elephants, however, it was difficult to control them, it is said. A total of two persons were killed and one was injured by the elephants. The wild elephants have so far destroyed 42 houses and crops of thousands of rupees in the district, it is stated.Posted on: 2004-01-15 03:55
