KATHMANDU, JAN 14 - Police today afternoon arrested at least eleven students as the latter tried to vandalise government vehicles and carried torch rallies in various locations of the city.
Namgyal Jangpo Sherpa, a student of Pashupati Campus in Chabahil was caught between the police and the rioting students.
Others arrested in Chabahil included Bikash Pandey, NSU Chabahil Campus unit president, Kamal Raj Sunwar and Pasupati Chaulagain, students of the same campus.
The arrests were made at 6:30 in the evening when the police intervened a torch rally of students.
Students affiliated to political parties also organised a 30-minute blackout in Chabahil area in the evening.
During the incident, police arrested Baladev Timilsina, vice president of NSU Pashupati Campus unit and Jeevan Rai, campus secretary of the All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU), student organisations said.
Similarly, Mohan Malla, a student sustained head injury in a clash between police and students near Ghantaghar.
Similarly, in the afternoon Raju Bhusal, Jagat Chaudhary, Iswari Prasad Bhusal, Bharat Bhatta and Dhanendra Mahat were arrested from Putalisadak, student organisations said.
Meanwhile, at six in the morning today, a student was arrested by the police while vandalising a government vehicle in front of Shantinagar gate in New Baneshwor.
An eyewitness said the student was all alone hitting the window ~ ~ anes of a government vehicle at around six am. He seemed to be ignorant of the security personnel around him.
"I cannot imagine how severely he was beaten. After that he was herded into a nearby police station," an eyewitness told The Kathmandu Post.Meanwhile, student organisations have also called a one-hour nation-wide vehicle strike between three and four pm tomorrow.
