Putalisadak has ‘unhealthy’ air
KATHMANDU, JAN 14 - The air in residential and city areas of the Kathmandu valley has continued to remain "unhealthy" due to concentration of fine dust particles. However, the air of the valley’s fringe areas is "good" to breathe, according to pollution results of the Ministry of Population and Environment (MoPE).
According to the weekly pollution results released today by the MoPE, the Putalisadak area had air with concentration of fine dust particles, known as PM10, three times higher than the safe limit, last week.
The safe limit for PM10, the major pollutant in the air of the Kathmandu valley, is 120 microgram per cubic metre. But the air of the Putalisadak area on January 8 had the pollutant as high as 366 micro gram per cubic metre, which means "very unhealthy air".
In the same way, the other places of the valley like Patan, Thamel and Bhaktapur had air with fine dust particles more than two times higher than the safe limit in the last week. The pollution monitoring stations set-up at the places monitor air of roadside areas, residential areas and the valley background respectively.
To the happiness of those living in the fringe areas of the valley, the air monitoring stations at Matsyagaon and Kirtipur have been showing that the level of PM10 is well below the safe limit, the air there being good to breathe.Posted on: 2004-01-15 03:44
