70 schools facing closure in Bhojpur

Bedraj Paudel
BHOJPUR, JAN 13 - At least 70 community- run schools in Bhojpur district are on the verge of closure after the village development committees (VDCs) stopped providing grants to the schools.
More than 24,000 students currently studying in these community-run schools are facing a bleak prospect of completing school education after their teachers stopped receiving salaries since September last year.
Talking to The Kathmandu Post, Dal Bahadur Giri, headmaster of Thotneri Proposed Lower Secondary School, said, "If the VDC does not continue to provide financial support, we will have no option but to shut them down."
Juddha Bahadur Subedi, chairman of the school management committee of Nawadurga Proposed Secondary School in Dalgaon, said he would also consider closing down school if the VDC stops the grants.
The secretary of Tiwaribhanjyang VDC, Gajendra Bhujel said, "The VDC was
providing salaries of three teachers of a proposed lower
secondary. But we stopped this following an order from the district development committee."
However, Arjun Niraula, District Education Officer said that he had not received complaints from the concerned school authorities stating their financial problems.Posted on: 2004-01-14 04:23
