Lack of market affects farmers in Terai

RSS

SIRAHA, JAN 13 - Farmers of eastern Terai, regarded as the hotbed for agriculture production in the country, are said to have been facing difficulties in the absence of market management for their produce.
Farmers in Siraha district, who have been playing an important role in rural economy development, are finding difficult to sustain themselves as a result of ignorance of the bodies concerned.
The stalls constructed by the government in seven different places of the district for farmers to sell their produce are either incomplete or in dire condition.
Lack of protection of the constructed stalls, the farmers have been unable to sell their produce.
Construction of the Dhangadi agriculture market stall that began three years ago at an estimated cost of Rs 1.2 million is still incomplete.
However, chief officer of the District Agriculture Development Office that is responsible for the construction, Dwarika Prasad Dahal says Rs 500,000 has already been spent on the stall and it remains incomplete as a result of lack of budget.
Likewise, the agriculture stalls constructed in Lahan, Surakipur, Kalyanpur and Golbazaar are also in a dilapidated condition due to absence of protection measures. The stalls were constructed at the cost of above Rs 5 million under the Sagarmatha Integrated Development Programme.
Some of the stalls have become roofless while some are tearing off, say the local farmers.
As a result of the lack of a proper place to sell their products, the farmers coming to the bazaar from remote parts of the district are compelled to either sell their produce for low price or go back home without finding a buyer.Posted on: 2004-01-14 04:19
