Dalit woman seeking justice

POST REPORT
TANAHUN, JAN 13 - Alleging that her neighbours forcibly fed her human excreta and urine, Seti Pariyar, 46 of Dhorfedi VDC-1, today reached Damauli, the headquarters of Tanahun district vowing to see justice done.
Pariyar had called Jhuma Kumari Mahat, 50, a ‘witch’ during a heated verbal exchange a week ago. After the confrontation, Mahat accompanied by her son Durga Bahadur Mahat came to Pariyar’s house, roughed her up and forced the excreta and urine into her mouth, according to the victim.
Later, the mother and son threatened Pariyar and others present, not to publicise the incident warning that they would face stringent action from Maoists in case they did, according to Maya Pariyar, an eyewitness.
"It was due to their threats that I kept silent for a few days. However, the atrocity was intolerable to bear, and I have come here demanding action against the culprits," said a depressed Pariyar.
Pariyar has filed a complaint at the Nepal Suppressed Caste Freedom Society.
"If the accused party seeks reconciliation and agrees to compensate the victim, we won’t move the court", said source at the society.
However, Durga Bahadur Mahat has denied the allegations made by Pariyar against him and his mother.
"Pariyar was drunk during the incident. What we did was we just fed her some clay and water," said Mahat.Posted on: 2004-01-14 04:15
