Four govt vehicles vandalised as student protests continue
KATHMANDU, JAN 13 - Students vented their anger against "regression" today by vandalising four government vehicles in the city as their protests continued.
The latest violence took place as the alliance of seven student organisations began its behind-the-scene protests. The protests included vandalising government vehicles and organising torch rallies at undisclosed locations.
Students carrying torches this afternoon vandalised a government Pajero vehicle in New Baneshwor and another in New Road. They also set ablaze two government motorcycles, one in front of the Ratna Rajya Laxmi College at Exhibition Road, and the other in Kirtipur, in front of the Boy’s Hostel of the Tribhuvan University.
Concerning the latter incident, the National Dalit Commission issued its press statement to the effect that students assaulted Giri Bahadur Sunuwar, a section officer at the Commission, when he was going home from his office on his motorcycle.
Students torched his motorcycle in front of the Kirtipur Boys’ Hostel, the statement added.
Police arrested five student activists in connection with today’s incidents. They include Sundar Mani Acharya, Dilli Ram KC and Binod Paneru.
Pradip Poudel, vice president of the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) said Santosh Pandey, president of the Free Students’ Union at the Chabahil Campus, was arrested for no misdemeanour on his part.
He said that tomorrow’s protest would be more violent on account of the police having apprehended students today.
