KATHMANDU, JAN 12 - DAV School, Jawalakhel, in conjunction with Sitaram Dairy Company, Nebico, Godrej and Cadburys organised a "Healthy and Smart Child Contest 2060" at the school’s premises today.115 children from the Kathmandu Valley took part in the contest. The contest was preceded by a cultural programme in which senior students of the DAV school riveted the 700-strong audience with their rendering of modern and traditional Nepali songs. Energetic solo dance routines by younger children also captivated the audience, consisting predominantly of angelic toddlers and their eager parents.
The Chief Guests at the programme were cine artistes Rekha Thapa and Harihar Sharma. The panel of judges comprised Rekha Thapa, Dr. Ramesh Malla, Sangita Bhandatri, Prabhakar Sharma and Siyaram Singh.
According to a member of the organising committee, who preferred to remain un-named, the show had been organised to ‘provide a platform for kids to show how smart and healthy they were’. "The health and mental sharpness of kids of this age is a reflection of the care and attention by parents to their children," added the committee member.Pranab and Katrina, the proud parents of adorable 4-year-old Tejaswi, said, "Contests of this type are a wonderful opportunity for our children to display their talent and receive feedback on the same from professionals. We are really enjoying the proceedings of this afternoon." Little Tejaswi herself was rather reticent, preferring to answer this scribe’s query with a shy but cute smile.According to Mr. Dhundi Ram Khanal, the programme manager for the event, the selection of the 115 participant-toddlers was made from an initial pool of some 200 who had applied for participation. "The only criteria we used during the preliminary selection was reasonable good health and intelligence of the children," he added.
All in all, the event was a big draw for children and parents alike whose faces reflected the ambition, to come out a winner. The categories, for which judgements were made, were for dress-up, appearance of good health, politeness and ability to speak sentences with clarity and grammatical purity.Posted on: 2004-01-13 03:39
