KATHMANDU, JAN 12 - At least 11 Maoists and a soldier of the Royal Nepal Army were killed in the latest incidents of encounters in various parts of the country, according to reports.
A report from Gaighat, the district headquarters of Udayapur, said that one RNA soldier, Raju Rana, was killed and over half a dozen Maoists were injured during an hour-long pitched battle at Limpatar today morning. Other rebels carried away the injured Maoists, on their shoulders, said local security officials.
Meanwhile in Jhapa, four Maoist-militants were killed during an encounter with security forces at Farsi Village of the Khudunabari Village Development Committee today morning.
Those killed in the encounter have been nick-named as Prem Fago, Chhitij, Nichho and Sudarshan Limbu of Lurumba VDC-4 in Panchthar, according to Major Ram Kaji Thapa of the Batukdal Gan at Charali. The forces also recovered a large cache of arms, ammunition and explosives from the slain rebels.
In Taplejung, three Maoist rebels were killed on Saturday in the Pedang VDC. They have been identified as an additional central committee members of the Maoist-aligned All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary Deepak Dulal, 30, Jemi, 18, and Rup. Details about the incident are yet to come in.
Meanwhile, a report from Gorkha states that two Maoists were killed during an encounter with government forces at Barpak Village. The slain rebels have been identified as students Shankar Tamu and Samjhana. The security officials claimed that they were killed during an encounter.
In another incident of gunfight in Bara, one Maoist-rebel known as Rama Nanda Sahani of Benauli VDC-2 was shot dead at Pakadiya Chikani, located about 25 km away from the district headquarters, Kalaiya, close to the Nepal-India border. A joint team of security personnel was mobilised to the area after a tip-off about the smuggling of explosives by a group of Maoists from India.
Likewise, a report from Panchthar said that an unidentified Maoist was killed when a bomb he was carrying exploded, at Nagin VDC yesterday, and the rebels are said to have buried him at the site of the explosion. Another rebel was also injured in the blast.Posted on: 2004-01-13 03:45
