‘King violated constitution’

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, JAN 12 - Biswo Nath Upadhyaya, former Chief Justice claimed that the country was drifting towards a republic.
In an exclusive interview with The Kathmandu Post, Upadhyaya said that republic was inevitable if the king refuses to reconcile with the political parties and continues adopting a confrontationist approach.
He also asserted that perfect democracy meant republic. "But we have to think seriously before taking decision to go to the republican set up," Upadhyaya said.
While talking about regression initiated by the king, Upadhyaya claimed that the monarchy was seeking an
opportunity to intervene into politics and grab the peoples’ power since the beginning of democratic process in 1991.Posted on: 2004-01-13 03:55
